Not Your Average Green Smoothie

Early mornings have seriously cut into my smoothie making time. There’s nothing better than half a frozen banana, a spoonful of peanut butter, oats, almond milk, and plant based protein powder blended up to creamy perfection. At least in my opinion. But I hate eating the same thing over aIMG_7272nd over, so when my Mom gave me Simple Green Smoothies by Jen Hansard and Jadah Sellner while she was visiting with my Dad last week, I was super excited. With the green smoothie fad running strong, I was eager to see what fun ideas these ladies came up with. Let me tell you, this cookbook does not disappoint.

I’ve had such a whirlwind of a week trying to catch up with work and everything else going on in my life, that I didn’t get a chance to try one of their smoothies until after my run yesterday morning. I was skeptical that I’d even be able to make one of their smoothies since I hadn’t had a chance to get to the grocery store and pick up some kale or spinach. Just as I was about to put the blender away and say hi to my old friend oatmeal instead, I saw the Carrot Cake Smoothie Bowl recipe. You should know that if I can’t have ice cream cake for my birthday, then carrot cake is my next request. This smoothie bowl had my name written ALL OVER IT and with a few tweaks, I was able to recreate my own version of it. If the flavors of this bowl are any precursor to the rest of the smoothies in the book, my blender is about to get a serious workout because this was one of the best smoothies I’ve made in a while.

Carrot Cake Smoothie Bowl

  • 1 cup romaine
  • 1/2 cup chopped carrots
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup frozen pineapple
  • 3/4 cup almond milk
  • 1 scoop NOW Foods Vanilla Plant Based Protein Powder
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon


  • silvered almonds
  • flax seeds
  • coconut flakes

Blend allow ingredients in your high speed blender, pour into your favorite bowl, top with ingredients, and enjoy! What are your favorite smoothie blends? Let me know in the comments below!
